Second only to gourmet taco joints, restaurants serving upscale smash burgers seem to be the fastest-growing segment of Nashville’s culinary scene. Gabby’s was making delicious burgers smashed onto a hot griddle long before we diners knew that was something we craved, and they continue to do it extraordinarily well and without pretentiousness. Owner Doug Havron wouldn’t have it any other way. He’s a no-nonsense guy with an equally straightforward menu of grass-fed burgers, hot dogs, fries and shakes. (Although there is a little fun nonsense on the “secret menu,” items devised by and named after favorite customers. You’ll have to ask for the password.)
