As their nickname “Band of Firsts” suggests, TSU’s Aristocrat of Bands has consistently broken new ground since their inception in 1946, and 2023 was another year of landmark achievements. Represented by album co-producers Sir the Baptist, Dallas “Dubba-AA” Austin and Larry Jenkins, the AOB became the first historically Black university marching band to win a Grammy. They took home not one but two trophies from the Feb. 5 ceremony: Best Roots Gospel Album for The Urban Hymnal, and Best Spoken Word Poetry Album for their contribution to The Poet Who Sat by the Door by Urban Hymnal collaborator J. Ivy.
