Following Tennessee legislation aimed at restricting drag performances in the spring, many touring artists, like Yo La Tengo and Idles, used their Tennesee shows to protest the law and celebrate drag. But when boygenius’ crew appeared in skirts as they prepped the stage for the band during June’s stop at the touring Re:SET Festival, it was the start of one of the most fabulous protests from folks outside the actual drag community. The trio of Lucy Dacus, Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers hit the stage in full and exceptionally fancy drag, introducing themselves as Lucille Balls, Shanita Tums and Queef Urban, respectively. Maybe it was because all three are part of the LGBTQ community, but this show of solidarity felt earnest in a way that shone above the rest.
