The Contenders outside Exit/In, 1970s: Jimbeau Walsh, Steve Runkle, Walter Hyatt, Champ Hood, Tommy Goldsmith

In the mid-’70s, The Contenders — Tommy Goldsmith, Champ Hood, Walter Hyatt, Steve Runkle and Jimbeau Walsh — rose to the top of the Nashville rock scene with a captivating mix of good songs, tight musicianship and soulful vocal harmonies. But the band broke up after a couple of years, leaving behind just a single eponymous LP from 1978. Long out of print, that important slice of the city’s rock history was essentially lost until July, when Southern Moon Records reissued The Contenders on CD and to all the major digital platforms. The reissue was remixed and remastered and includes a bonus track not included on the original LP, as well as informative liner notes by Goldsmith.
