Don’t be misled by the three-letter suffix in the foursome’s moniker: Nothing about Gloom Girl MFG’s sound feels manufactured. Since forming in late 2020, charismatic frontperson Paige MacKinnon and her colleagues have focused mostly on hitting the local small-venue scene hard and buckling down in the practice room. There they tirelessly fine-tune their fast-growing repertoire of punk-glam originals that are equal parts T-Rex and Sleater-Kinney. With the release of their EP Factory, some touring, and a highly quotable seal of approval from the estimable Mike “Grimey” Grimes — “Nashville needs this band” — under its belt, the smart bet is on the group transcending local-fave status in the year to come.
