We can’t really convey the joy we felt when we first heard that The 5 Spot in East Nashville was hosting Afrobeat nights this past winter and spring. It was epic: evidence that our little music scene can be as cosmopolitan as it hopes. We were elated when Afrokokoroot ended up being not just our biggest resident Afrobeat band but an excellent Afrobeat beat, bringing all the energy and excitement of late-night Lagos to Five Points and beyond. Afrokokoroot’s fiery horn arrangements and full-throttle percussion are a worldly blast of beauty, and Music City is richer for it.
