Of all the rookie rockers playing Nashville in the ’23 season, Crystal Egg might be the most difficult to classify. The bohemian vocals-drums-synthesizers trio doesn’t really have direct peers, past or present. Their first gig this spring was at the East Side art collective Soft Junk, opening for Snooper. It was a fitting spot, as the Egg feels spiritually hatched from the art-gallery legacy of the ’60s Downtown Manhattan fringe and the New York no wave scene 20 years later — atonal, poetic, dreamlike, primordial and lawless. All I know is that you need to put their next show on your calendar.
