On his first EP since dropping his debut full-length Journey in 2020, Brian Brown can’t stop moving. Two Minute Drill is a fast and furious seven minutes and 18 seconds, the result of Brown challenging himself to rap complete thoughts on beats clocking in at less than two minutes each. Tracks like “NBA Jam,” which netted props from Pitchfork, show an incredible economy of thought, pulling together lines on rap fakery and Nashville’s 2020 Christmas Day bombing in a compact package. My favorite: The “Neva Eva”-referencing cut “Trillville,” which goes hard on a John Carpenter-influenced beat by Krashmaxx.
