Yola writes songs about many different kinds of love — for yourself, between a couple, among a community and more. She sings them in a rich, expressive voice that moves gently and carries heavy burdens gracefully, on both her 2019 debut LP Walk Through Fire and her new album Stand for Myself. Even more importantly than that, she’s using her platform to offer opportunities to people who too seldom get them, pushing toward a better and stronger music community in the process. And she’s making music that brings together Music City’s stellar traditions with a broader range of perspectives from players whose stock in trade isn’t country — setting a standard for an even newer, even more inclusive, even better sound of Nashville.
