When I pitched this sauce from Caffé Nonna as the best, it was based solely on grabbing it at the Turnip Truck and being shocked how robust, zippy and satisfying a jarred marinara can be. It’s deceptively simple — tomatoes, Burgundy wine, onion, garlic, plus just the right punch of chiles — and paired with Nicoletto’s pasta, it makes an exceptionally easy, locally sourced Italian dinner. What I did not know, however, was the heartbreaking but inspiring story behind the arrabiata. All proceeds go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in honor of Zoë Marie, chef-owner Dan Maggipinto’s daughter who died of a rare brain cancer just before her second birthday.
