For the past several years, it seemed as though Nicole Kidman was voluntarily retiring her superstar status, focusing her efforts on indie and foreign films like The Family Fang and Strangerland. But HBO’s Big Little Lies put her back in the Hollywood spotlight, building off the momentum gained by 2016’s Lion, for which Kidman was nominated for an Academy Award. Portraying a complicated and inconceivably sad woman with depth and nuance, Kidman reminded anyone who hadn’t been paying attention just who the hell she is by perfectly balancing the humanity of the character with the protective roboticism necessary to survive in a traumatic relationship. The performance, not surprisingly, won her an Emmy. I’m sure she’ll proudly display that statue on a shelf next to a framed clipping of this Best of Nashville 2017 award. Hi, Nicole! MEGAN SELING
