Best Community Theater

Even accomplished pros might have a tough time successfully pulling off Tony Kushner’s epic Angels in America. The fact that ACT 1 did it — both Part 1 and Part 2, under the direction of Jim Manning and Lane Wright — says a ton about this organization’s ability to marshal local talent and reach beyond its grasp. ACT 1’s 2016-17 season also got serious with a flawed but very worthy mounting of Sam Shepard’s A Lie of the Mind, then closed the year with the joyfully hilarious Nashville premiere of the musical Reefer Madness.
