It was already an exciting day in April when beloved Durham, N.C., indie rockers The Mountain Goats released the single “Rain in Soho” to announce their album Goths. The menacing song, inspired by singer John Darnielle’s love for ’80s goth bands like Sisters of Mercy and The Birthday Party, borrows some of the genre’s dark imagery to weave a threatening tapestry of doom, as Darnielle sings about blood pacts and vanishing friends. The touch that really makes the song hit its mark is the chorus of voices crying out “No, no, no, no!” like an angry gang of pitchfork-wielding townsfolk marching to Frankenstein’s castle, and it’s supplied by our very own Nashville Symphony Chorus. What a nice, albeit kind of spooky, surprise. MEGAN SELING
