Behzad Ranjbaran, an Iranian-born American composer, made a huge impression in Nashville with his Concerto for Flute and Orchestra. His 27-minute concerto proved to be a daring, original and intensely musical work. The piece left no emotion or instrumental timbre unexplored, and I suspect it will occupy a prominent place in the repertoire of the modern flute concerto. Nashville Symphony principal flutist Érik Gratton gave this music an authoritative reading in April. JOHN PITCHER
