Over the years, double-bass phenom Edgar Meyer has written numerous concertos for bass and other instruments. This past season, he did something utterly new, writing a major symphonic work that didn’t feature a solo instrument. That piece, titled — what else? — New Piece for Orchestra, proved to be a 20-minute gem full of color, contrast and lyrical appeal. The Nashville Symphony under the direction of Giancarlo Guerrero gave the work an exuberant premiere performance. JOHN PITCHER
