Columbus, the brilliant debut feature film from Nashville director Kogonada, is about many things. But at its heart, it is a conversation between presence and absence. As it happens, so is the music of Hammock, and when Kogonada read about the local duo discussing that very tension, he knew they were the band he was looking for. Their airy, plangent score not only punctuates key moments, but also manages a difficult and graceful feat — disappearing into, and reappearing from, the sound of the film itself. STEVE HARUCH
