Best Cheap Lunch

For $9 you can get a half-sandwich and a salad at Dozen and find yourself eating a variety of delicious things on the greatest baguette in the city. To wit: the salami. On crunchy bread comes slices of the cured meat, accompanied by little pickled gherkins and a shallot mustard — close your eyes and you might as well be in Paris. The fall menu also includes Benton’s bacon sandwiches, a Wedge Oak sausage version with apple butter, and a portobello edition that refuses to play second fiddle to meatier menu mates. The bigger problem with trying to escape Dozen if you’re on a budget are the piles of cookies and madeleines by the register. STEVE CAVENDISH
