From Weegee and Clark to Araki and Arbus, photographers are drawn to subcultures. David Piñeros’ Skullcap hung at Zeitgeist after our Best of Nashville issue went to press last fall, but I can never leave a good show behind. Piñeros’ black-and-white street portraits capture figures who are squeezed into ripped fishnets, pierced and inked, high as kites and out after midnight. The photographer’s images look as if they could have been snapped in London in 1975, but they capture Nashville’s present-day underground punk scene intimately and with empathy.
