An artist as important and influential as Alicia Henry deserves a showcase like Alicia, the exhibition curated by Jamaal Sheats that was on display at Fisk for the better part of 2023. It was an intimate but wide-ranging show that included textile-based works, ceramics, collages — even paintings with embroidered elements — all lovingly selected by Sheats, who is Henry’s longtime colleague at Fisk, and her former student. It was a fascinating autobiography of a show that was still somehow full of surprises. LAURA HUTSON HUNTER
