Best Barbecue

We didn’t need Bon Appétit to tell us Martin’s is exceptional, but a barbecue joint making the list of America’s 50 Best New Restaurants speaks volumes. For me, it’s the only Nashville barbecue that can hold its own with Memphis (or my Uncle Stewart — show me a girl whose uncle’s barbecue isn’t her favorite, and I’ll show you a Yankee). Martin’s cooks whole hogs low and slow in cinderblock pits, as God intended, so once it’s pulled, every bite has char, salt, fat and sweetness. In a town where some “BBQ” never sees hickory wood, Martin’s smokes the competition. ASHLEY BRANTLEY
