Best Bakery

To be a great bakery, you need to do both the savory and the sweet well, and Claire Meneely’s Dozen in Wedgewood-Houston excels in virtually everything. The foundation for Dozen is the baguettes, available to go or served up at lunch with things like sweet potato puree and bacon or trout salad with sliced apples. I’ve lost count of the great things I’ve eaten from that counter: endlessly layered croissants that smell like butter, cookies with melty chocolate chips or bits of candied ginger, a chocolate cream pie so good it will curl your toes. Next time you want to treat yourself, just pick up a loaf of sourdough, take it home, toast it, and slather it with some good butter. You’ll love the bliss of a simple treat. STEVE CAVENDISH
