Best Overdue Tribute in Nashville 2026: 'Sistah Griot: The Iconoclastic Art of Barbara Bullock' at the Frist Art Museum
When painter Barbara Bullock died in Nashville in 1996, she was best known to a circle of local artists and collectors who encountered her work through Carlton Wilkinson’s legendary Jefferson Street creative space, In the Gallery. Three decades later, Wilkinson put the institutional spotlight on Bullock’s confrontational canvases as the guest curator of one of 2026’s best local exhibitions. Sistah Griot gathered paintings disconnected from movements, markets and critical trends. Bullock’s uncompromising expressions came from her sacred, unique, individual self.
