Best Exhibition Theme in Nashville 2026: 'Cut Out the Tongue' at Random Sample
I never want to hear another person say that collage or mixed media is naive. If you need a reason why, I’ll point you to Alexis Özden’s wonderfully curated show, Cut Out the Tongue. Five queer artists with Southwest Asian and North African backgrounds contributed artworks that were woven, etched and assembled with hard lines, rough cuts and golden edges. To the degree that the show’s title seemed to refer to violence — particularly that of censorship and control — the works showcased the force of will and creativity necessary to live in defiance of that violence.
