After word spread that Billy Block had Stage 4 melanoma, there wasn’t one benefit show organized to raise money for his treatment — there was a whole slew of them. As the master of ceremonies and indefatigable artist-booster of the Western Beat and Billy Block live shows, in addition to being a respected alt-country drummer, he’s helped new-to-towners and no-names get in front of the right crowds en route to becoming Americana and country somebodies. When Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale, Rivers Rutherford, Jeffrey Steele, Delbert McClinton, Gary Nicholson, Emily West and loads of other performers, many of whom were at some point showcased by Block, signed on for fundraisers at half a dozen clubs around town, they were paying back the show of support.
