Nashville Ballet refers to its annual winter show — an adventurous mix of live music and cutting-edge dance — as Attitude. Nashville dance fans look forward to this program all year, knowing they can always expect the unexpected. Who would have guessed, for instance, that the late great Johnny Cash could provide ballet dancers with an unfailingly sensitive soundtrack? Choreographer Christopher Stuart’s heartfelt tribute to the Man in Black, performed live in February by the ballet along with vocalists Trent Dabbs and Amy Stroup of Sugar and the Hi Lows, proved that Cash had some news for Tchaikovsky — namely, that ballet with attitude is appealing to dance fans who want more from the corps than dancing snowflakes and Sugar Plum Fairies.
