No parent wants to be put in the spotlight in this way, but far too many have been. The tragic Covenant School shooting in March left three students and three staff members dead and an entire community in grief. In the wake of such devastation, Covenant School family members have channeled their energy into advocating for responsible gun control by testifying in the legislature on proposed laws, advocating for mental health resources and working on bipartisan solutions for safe storage and stricter background checks — even as they’ve faced pushback, and their situation has become extremely politicized. Some of the Covenant parents have banded together to create the Covenant Families for Brighter Tomorrows organization, basing their messaging on the “timeless truths” that the late educator Katherine Koonce used in her teaching: Act justly, love mercy and walk humbly.
