Nashville is full of historical markers identifying moments of enduring significance, from the lunch-counter sit-ins of the early civil rights movement to the surrender of Nashville to Union forces a century prior. This year, the city added a cultural icon to its list of people and places commemorated by one of these placards: Bettie Page. In April — on what would have been the trailblazing pinup model’s 100th birthday — a historical marker was erected in front of Hume-Fogg High School, where the Nashville native graduated as salutatorian in 1940. Giving a redemptive arc to the story is the fact that Page’s marker is right across the street from the Estes Kefauver Federal Building, which is named for the U.S. senator known for his moral crusade against pornography in general and Page in particular.
