I’ve always thought of train sounds far off in the distance as rather soothing. It’s comforting to hear that whistle blow, lonesome or not. And then I moved not too far away from the CSX Intermodal Terminal, where the only train sounds that echo through the night are the interminable, haunting screech of brakes. Sometimes they sound like a haunted wind chime. Sometimes they sound like the slow death screams of a thousand robots, crushed into oblivion. There’s a horror movie waiting to be made here, y’all, so get on it. CARI WADE GERVIN
