Historical art exhibitions can often be stuffy affairs filled with works that claim important provenances but don’t always excite contemporary eyes. But the Frist’s The Power of Pictures: Early Soviet Photography and Film wasn’t that kind of show. The exhibition demonstrated how new technologies and artistic imaginations can inspire each other when artists first get their hands on a new medium. It also offered fascinating examples about the role that image-making plays in cultural identity and sense of place. The exhibition even spilled outside the Frist’s walls with a finely curated mini-festival of early Soviet cinema that popped up on screens all over Nashville. Even just the vintage movie posters made this one well worth gallery admission. JOE NOLAN
