Brikolaj is a vintage store, art gallery and performance space in the downtown Arcade, and it’s making a name for itself as an avant-garde art crawl destination. Last year’s Cryptophasia was a two-part performance that took place before the space was officially open. The November and December performances featured a group of artists mostly hidden inside a room-size installation with a giant homemade gamelan constructed from found objects. The artists simultaneously moved around, under and over the contraption as they went at the ringing, clanging, gonging instrument with all manner of musical banging. Add some random-seeming video footage projected on the wall in the darkened room and one of those spinning stroboscopic Dreamachines that artist Brion Gysin invented with Beat Generation technician Ian Sommerville, and you’ve got yourself a Best of Nashville nod.
