Best Song About Marijuana in Nashville 2026: Daniel Leyes, “Ha Ha Weed Is Legal”
When marijuana was legalized in his home state of New Jersey, Nashville singer-songwriter Daniel Leyes smoked a fat joint, picked up his guitar and began joyously singing, “Ha ha weed is legal.” Leyes never intended to develop the song snippet into a full-blown song, until the late, great Todd Snider — who co-produced Leyes’ album Medicinal Americana with Joe Bisirri — heard the snippet. Snider loved it and insisted Leyes finish the song for the album. The result is a fun, bouncy track with a party atmosphere. It seems fitting it was one of the final recordings to feature the stoner-hippie folk singer before Snider’s death in November.
