We’ve had all summer to soak in Any River, the latest record from mightily democratic instrument- and lead-vocal-swapping rock trio Styrofoam Winos, and it is another all-timer in the collective oeuvre of Lou Turner, Trevor Nikrant and Joe Kenkel. On the surface, jams like “Pearls,” “Swimminin” and “Somebody Wants to Send You a Message” are breezy and groovy, and feel lived-in. They’re casual about sharing deep insights into human nature and creativity, like you’re having a conversation with a friend rather than getting a lecture or a presentation on a grand vision. They’re always refreshing, reminding us of why we love legends in the pantheon like Lambchop and Silver Jews while doing their own thing.
