Best Album Drop in Nashville 2026: Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds, Mutiny After Midnight
Genre-hopping has become the go-to for Sturgill Simpson’s alter ego, Johnny Blue Skies. Following the classic-rock-indebted 2024 album Passage du Desir, Mr. Blue Skies and his merry band of pirates, the Dark Clouds, got their country funk and “disco hedonism” on in 2026’s Mutiny After Midnight. The album’s release was almost as fun as the music — Simpson himself briefly leaked the entire thing on YouTube before its official physical-media-only drop. Mutiny’s “boogie at the end of the world” vibe was eventually unleashed onto streaming services, but not before collectors and fans snapped up the vinyl, CD and cassette versions, pushing the record to debut at No. 3 on the all-genre Billboard 200 chart.
