Aaron Lee Tasjan’s music is a tapestry made up of heaps of threads of influence, and he adds new ones and changes how they’re arranged with each album. His sixth solo LP includes groovy psych rock in which a lithe string section dances with pedal steel, driving power pop running on big acoustic guitar arrangements and electric guitar sounds that are truly nasty in the best way. There are co-writes with Bobby Bare Jr. and the late, great Todd Snider among others, and a tribute to Tasjan’s onetime roommate, No Wave icon Lydia Lunch. The thread that ties all of Tasjan’s work together — a clear-eyed, humanistic look at human nature with a dry, left-field sense of humor — is key to this album too. It’s what makes the timeless Underdog feel so compelling at a time when the worst of humanity is on display 24/7.
