Best Country Collaboration in Nashville 2026: Willow Avalon and Kaitlin Butts, “Hypothetically Speaking”

Country music is positively littered with murder songs, and many of the best are by women. Vicki Lawrence’s “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia” (famously covered by the one and only Reba McEntire), The Chicks’ wonderfully cheeky “Goodbye Earl” and Carrie Underwood’s Southern gothic tale “Two Black Cadillacs” spring to mind. Rising country stars Willow Avalon and Kaitlin Butts teamed up for the year’s bloodiest song, “Hypothetically Speaking.” The plot concerns speculation on how they might murder their friend Lee Ann’s husband Carl. The song, a highlight of Avalon’s latest album Pink Pocket Pistol, gallops with Kacey Musgraves-esque humor and Bobbie Gentry charm.
