You can’t throw a Kwik Sak without hitting a Mapco around here, so it’s not like the city needs more interchangeable convenience stores. What’s irreplaceable is a neighborhood fixture like proprietor Dan Smith’s Purple Cow (aka Granny White Market), a place that’s created generations of memories with its attention to customers (and their kids and dogs). That’s not a slap at longtime owner Reese Smith III, currently engaged in a legal battle with the unrelated Smith over the market: He comes across as a decent and sympathetic man and has a right to make money off his property. But there’s no avoiding the fact that if this goes, simply replacing it with a Twice Daily won’t fill the loss.
