Her Country

Longtime music writer and sometime Scene contributor Marissa Moss didn’t necessarily surprise us with her powerhouse book Her Country — we’ve always known her as a master of telling country music tales and levying bold critique of the industry. But her book is more than just good, it’s necessary reading for anyone interested in country music. Moss details the experiences that Kacey Musgraves, Mickey Guyton and Maren Morris had coming up in country music circles over the past 20 years. The book is full of context: It shows levels of inequity in the genre and juxtaposes the struggles of white women and Black women, who both fight against a white, male-dominated industry.
