Best Large Jazz Orchestra

After more than two decades, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra continues to disprove widely held myths about big bands and their music. NJO shows remain fresh and versatile, and an impressive array of first-rate soloists juggles other gigs and sessions to be part of the roster under the steady guidance of longtime leader and trumpeter Jim Williamson. One example of their adaptability: This season they teamed up on some shows with soul, rock and funk stalwart Jason Eskridge. On other occasions they’ve done holiday programs, Latin and salsa dates, and incorporated arrangements of contemporary pop songs into the menu alongside the customary mix of classic swing and Great American Songbook numbers. Anyone who thinks a large jazz group can’t be edgy and exciting, or feature a fresh and constantly evolving sound, hasn’t heard a Nashville Jazz Orchestra performance. RON WYNN
