The Belcourt’s Staff Picks series has brought an eclectic array of spectacular repertory films back to the big screen, from hits like Thelma and Louise to more obscure picks like American Movie and Killer of Sheep. But nothing was as exciting as a viewing of staffer Heather Scudder’s selection, Hands on a Hardbody, at the arthouse in April. The hilarious 1997 documentary from director S.R. Bindler about a small-town competition to win a hardbody truck (yes, truck, get your mind out of the gutter) has a cult following, but most of the film’s superfans have never had a chance to see it in theaters. Most folks who have seen it love it, and anyone who loves it has watched it too many times to count. But there was something incredibly special about coming together with all the other weirdos in town who pledge allegiance to this film alongside a few newbies who experienced its heartwarming absurdity for the very first time.
