When political discourse devolves into willful ignorance and unproductive outrage, the arts have a lot of heavy lifting to do. Michael Dickins’ Wailing Wall imagined Trump’s proposed southern border wall at the downtown crawl in October 2017. Visitors were greeted by a soundtrack that featured a crying baby as well as their own distorted reflections in the surface of the shiny black wall. We often ask questions about the art in a gallery, but Dickins’ work turned questions back on its viewers, and challenged gallery-goers to confront their own stances in these chaotic times. JOE NOLAN
