There’s a whole wide world beyond strictly popular entertainment, and FMRL continues to have our back with respect to making sure we get to experience it here. The mission statement of the organization, headed by longtime promoter and musician Chris Davis, is to book “events in the Middle Tennessee area for experimental and avant-garde musical artists that may not otherwise have a venue to play in Nashville.” So far this year, FMRL has been a vehicle for a brilliant spectrum of acts, ranging from Chinese-born guzheng composer Wu Fei improvising with guitar master Tashi Dorji to British lo-fi rocker Dan Melchior to a festival celebrating the films of music and cultural researcher Hisham Mayet. The organization’s slate of fall events (including Ivory Coast musicians Jess Sah Bi and Peter One at The Basement in November) is a promising one — see fmrlarts.org for more. P.J. KINZER
