Best Artistic Breakthrough

When Alex Blau’s Night Swimming opened last fall I was confused: The artist’s playful candy-colored palette was on display, but her precision lines and surfaces had been sacrificed for a much looser (even messier) aesthetic. And yet this show wouldn’t let me go — over multiple viewings I realized that what looked like a step backward was actually a great leap forward for Blau, and for my understanding of her evolving practice. JOE NOLAN
