No one at Casa Azafrán was watching TV on Jan. 20, as Donald Trump was being sworn in as the 45th President of the United States. Instead, the dozens of people visiting the cultural center were writing postcards to their elected officials, posing for photos in a photobooth and scarfing down churros and empanadas as part of Indivisible, a campaign committed to celebrating (and protecting) America’s diversity. Through Indivisible, Conexión Américas co-founder Renata Soto has given a voice, and a safe space, to Nashville’s Latin community. And though Trump has attacked the Latin community in a number of ways — threatening to build a wall, moving to end DACA, insulting Puerto Ricans in the wake of Hurricane Maria — Soto has remained committed to fighting back with love, strength and patience.
