The river glistens, the city gleams, the lights sparkle; boats pass below like leviathans barely visible in the depths; colors ripple and swirl on the water. The stadium towers one way and the Batman Building the other, and in between are the honks of saxophones, the unreeling-line sound of bicycle tires, the smell of faraway hot dogs and a gauntlet of selfies. It’s safe, but it hums with energy, and it’s elating whether you’re alone on an autumn night or walking back from a concert thousands strong, singing to the beat of the funky drummer on the sidewalk.
