The importance of Samuel Dunson’s contributions to Nashville’s contemporary art scene cannot be overstated. The artist’s visionary works expanded the scope of what painting could be for the city’s artists. He was among the pioneers who helped define Nashville’s particular brand of contemporary art, and he inspired the generation that brought a mural revolution to North Nashville. In September 2024, the artist’s science- and tech-informed show — Art O’Fiscal Intelligence at Julia Martin Gallery — was innovative and mystical, and it found the artist still one step ahead.
