When ZieherSmith opened its doors earlier this year, my expectations were high. When Andrea and Scott Zieher lived in New York, their gallery was a long-running fixture in Chelsea, and their frequent trips back to Andrea’s hometown of Nashville often intersected with pop-up exhibitions that were both fun and relevant. Still, the Edgehill-area gallery space exceeded my expectations. The inaugural event was a blockbuster two-person exhibition of Nashville-based artists Raheleh Filsoofi and Vadis Turner, and it showed that locally curated and cultivated art shows in Nashville can be just as dynamic, thoughtful and meaningful as they would be in any city. Add to that an ambitious gallery roster and a cute storefront area and you’ve got all the makings of a community-building art space.
