Best Crosstown Lineup of Free Local Rock and Day Drinking

There was a time (and it wasn’t all that long ago) when The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion playing the parking lot behind Grimey’s would have been a pretty BFD. At Record Store Day 2015, the scuzz-blues stalwarts’ late-afternoon set was just another highlight in a hot day stacked with cheap cold beer and free rock ’n’ roll in the backyards and parking lots of Grimey’s, The Groove, Third Man and Fond Object. In fact, the JSB appeared unannounced, interlopers in a lineup of kick-ass Tennessee rock popping off all across town. Those Darlins, PUJOL, Mystery Twins, Turbo Fruits, Idle Bloom, Adia Victoria, Self, King Bitch, Stone Jack Jones, Jawws, Hans Condor, Meth Dad, BZRK — who could rep us any harder than that? Even Nashville heartthrob Jonathan Jackson and his band Enation and active-rock fan favorites Halestorm, who both technically opened for Jon Spencer at Grimey’s, joined the party. Seriously, Nashville, if you want your out-of-town friends to visit when you can show off Music City at its coolest, Record Store Day is where it’s at.
