Critic's Pick — Michael Mann’s 'Manhunter: The Final Cut'

Michael Mann is in final-cut mode these days. Next month, he’ll release a 4K-enhanced final edit of Miami Vice, the 2006 big-screen reboot of his beloved ’80s cop show. But first, he’ll take it back even further to 40 years ago, when he dropped his uber-stylish 1986 serial-killer thriller Manhunter in theaters. Forever known as the first movie that brought author Thomas Harris’ prized cannibal mastermind Hannibal Lecter (played here by a pre-Succession Brian Cox) to the big screen, Manhunter has Mann turning Harris’ Red Dragon novel into a cool-looking but uneasy ride. (Don’t worry, Hopkins fans — The Silence of the Lambs is next weekend!) Future CSI star William Petersen is a tormented FBI profiler roped back into tracking down — and getting inside the mind of — a toothy psychopath (Tom Noonan, RIP). Manhunter is a cunning cult fave that set off the police-procedural wave, inspiring everything from David Fincher’s doom-and-gloom murder-mysteries to the myriad crime dramas that make up most of primetime television.
