People weren’t ready. The film industry was smack in the middle of the Gritty Reboot Era, and Universal Pictures decided to revive the long-dead Miami Vice property. Crime auteur Michael Mann was the executive producer of the uber-influential ’80s TV show, so he was a natural fit for an updated film version. Jamie Foxx was hot off a rare double-Oscar-nomination year, and Hollywood was putting Colin Farrell in everything; it seemed like a slam dunk. But critics, fans of the show and the moviegoing public did not respond well to what ended up being an ethereal, digital-pink tone poem rather than a traditional cop drama. Thankfully, 20 years later, people have come around. There’s a downright fervent cult of dedicated film bros (including myself) out there praising this movie every day. Luckily, Conner at the Belcourt is among our brethren, and he programmed Miami Vice as a Staff Pick this week. I’m practically giddy at the thought of sipping on a mojito while watching Foxx, Farrell and Naomie Harris navigate a Miami nightclub as the iconic Jay-Z/Linkin Park mash-up “Numb/Encore” plays. Somebody get me on a speedboat to Cuba!
