As much as I appreciate the grandeur and acoustics of the Schermerhorn Symphony Center, there’s something quite special about experiencing an evening of world-class music out under the stars. Local audiences can do just that this weekend, as the Nashville Symphony presents American Mosaic at Walk of Fame Park. Music Director Leonard Slatkin leads this unique multimedia concert event, which is billed as “a bold new composition honoring the people, places and spirit of the United States.” Created by composer Peter Boyer and photographer Joe Sohm (and co-commissioned by the Nashville Symphony), American Mosaic combines rich orchestral music with vivid 4K video featuring scenery from all 50 states, plus live narration from esteemed actor and humanitarian Gary Sinise. The evening’s program also includes all-American works by Aaron Copland, Duke Ellington, Joan Tower, Charles Ives and more. American Mosaic is free and open to the public, and guests are welcome to pack a picnic and bring the family. It’s a perfect way to enjoy your Labor Day weekend while honoring our nation’s unique beauty and musical identity.
